Depression and anxiety disorders are different, but people with depression often experience symptoms similar to those of an anxiety disorder, such as nervousness, irritability, problems sleeping and concentrating. But each disorder has its own causes and its own emotional and behavioural symptoms.

Depression is a common medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. It causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed.

Do you think you might be depressed? Here are some of the common symptoms of depression:

Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness – A bleak outlook—nothing will ever get better and there is nothing you can do to improve your situation.
Loss of interest in daily activities – You do not care anymore about former hobbies, pastimes, social activities, or sex. You have lost your ability to feel joy and pleasure.
Appetite or weight changes – Significant weight loss or weight gain—a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month.
Sleep changes – Either insomnia, especially waking in the early hours of the morning, or oversleeping.
Concentration problems – Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.

Anger or irritability – Feeling agitated, restless, or even violent. Your tolerance level is low, your temper short, and everything and everyone gets on your nerves.
Self-loathing – Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. You harshly criticize yourself for perceived faults and mistakes.
Reckless behaviour – You engage in escapist behaviour such as substance abuse, compulsive gambling, reckless driving, or dangerous sports.
Unexplained aches and pains – An increase in physical complaints such as headaches, back pain, aching muscles, and stomach pain.
Loss of energy – Feeling fatigued, sluggish, and physically drained. Your whole body may feel heavy, and even small tasks are exhausting or take longer to complete.

Are you anxious? Are you feeling worried about a problem at work? Do you have butterflies in your stomach while waiting for the results of a medical examination? Are you feeling nervous when driving home in rush-hour traffic as cars speed by and weave between lanes?

In life, everyone (both adults and children) experiences anxiety from time to time. For most, feelings of anxiety come and go, only lasting a short time. Some bouts of anxiety are more brief than others, lasting anywhere from a few minutes to a few days.

But for some people, these feelings of anxiety are more than just passing worries or a stressful day at work. The feelings of anxiety may not go away for many weeks, months, or even years. It can worsen over time, sometimes becoming so severe that it interferes with your daily life.

While anxiety symptoms vary from person to person, in general the body reacts in a very specific way to anxiety. When you feel anxious, your body goes on high alert, looking for possible danger and activating your fight or flight responses.
